SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - Late-inning hitting heroics from Danny Hayes and Carter Bell propelled the Oregon State baseball team to a 10-7, 10-inning victory over UT-San Antonio Monday at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Hayes led the late-inning barrage with a three-run home run to right in the ninth, pushing the Beavers to a 6-5 lead that was eventually extended to 7-5. The Roadrunners fought back to a 7-7 tie, forcing extra innings and setting the stage for Bell.
The junior pinch hit for Kavin Keyes with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the 10th. Bell hit a 2-2 pitch from reliever Blake Denman to center for a double, clearing the bases and giving OSU the 10-7 win.
James Nygren, who came on in the ninth, picked up the final three outs of the game for his first win of the year in his second appearance of the season.
The win put OSU at 5-3 on the year and forced UT-San Antonio to a 4-5 mark. The Beavers leave the state of Texas after going 3-1 over their four games.
Andrew Susac led the Beavers with two of the team's seven hits. Hayes and Bell both paced the club with three RBI apiece.
All told, the Beavers used seven pitchers in the game - compared to five for UT-San Antonio - with Nygren working 1 2/3 innings to get the win. He scattered two hits and a run while striking out two.
Denman ended the game with the loss after Bell's three-RBI double in the 10th. He dropped to 0-1 this season.
Josh Osich started his second game of the season and worked 2 1/3 innings, scattering two hits and a run while striking out four. He, as was the case with his counterpart, Matt Sims, did not get the decision. Sims worked three innings, allowing three hits, three runs and five walks and he struck out one.
OSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. Brian Stamps singled down the left-field line to drive in two, then scored himself when two batters later, Jared Norris singled through the left side to give OSU the 3-0 advantage.
UT-San Antonio, however, chipped away at the lead, evening the score at three with a single by RJ Perucki in the fourth. The Roadrunners took the lead in the fifth and added a run in the seventh for the 5-3 advantage, which stood until Hayes' home run in the ninth.
Daniel Rockett, Daniel Carpenter and Casey Selsor tallied three hits apiece for the Roadrunners, who had 12 against the seven OSU pitchers. Carpenter led the club with four RBI; he singled home two in the third, drove in another in the fifth and doubled in the ninth for UT-San Antonio's sixth run of the game.
Oregon State opens its 2011 home slate Friday when the Beavers host Hartford in the start of a four-game series at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. PT.
