FRESNO, Calif. - Three Oregon State pitchers limited Fresno State to two runs and six hits but the Beavers managed just one run and two hits of their own in a 2-1 loss to the Bulldogs Sunday night at Beiden Field.
Parker Berberet doubled to start the seventh, the Beavers' first hit since Carter Bell singled in the second. Berberet moved to third, then scored when Bell grounded out.
That run, however, was the only one the Beavers (2-1 overall) could muster off Fresno State (2-0) starter Greg Gonzalez and reliever Charlie Robertson. Gonzalez picked up the win after going seven full, scattering just two hits and a run while striking out eight.
Robertson picked up the save after keeping the Beavers off the board in the final two innings.
Cam Booser started his first career game but dropped to 0-1 after allowing both of Fresno State's runs. He ended the game allowing five hits while striking out four and walking three.
Fresno State center fielder Brennan Gowens put the first run on the board in the fourth when he homered to right center off Booser. It was the first home run this season for either the Beavers or their opponent.
The Bulldogs made it 2-0 in the fifth. Aaron Judge singled, moved to second on a balk and scored when Danny Muno floated a single into center.
Cole Baylis made his Oregon State debut - the fifth pitcher on Sunday to do so - as he came on in relief of Booser in the fifth. Baylis went 1 2/3 innings, allowing no hits and no runs while striking out three and walking one.
Matt Boyd came on in relief of Baylis in the seventh and worked 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three. He is the only Oregon State pitcher to make an appearance in all three games this season.
Chris Mallory led Fresno State with two hits.
Oregon State opened the day with a 4-2 victory over Gonzaga.
Oregon State plays in the final game of its trip to Fresno Monday against the host Bulldogs. First pitch from Beiden Field is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT.
