Softball Falls to Nebraska, 4-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Oregon State softball team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Cornhuskers of Nebraska Sunday afternoon by a final score of, 4-2, in the Beaver's final game of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Cornhuskers (5-1 overall) scored two runs in the bottom half of the first on a two-run home run by Tay Edwards off of Oregon State starter Marina Demore who fell to 3-1 on the season with the loss Sunday after pitching four innings allowing only three hits but surrendering four earned runs in the game.
Oregon State (4-1) cut the deficit to one run with a run in the top half of the third inning. Nikki Chandler led off the inning with a bunt single to third base and then advanced to second when Maggie Doremus walked. Lea Cavestany singled to center field scoring Chandler from second and advancing Doremus to third with no outs in the inning. Following a Cornhusker pitching change the Beavers were unable to bring in Doremus from third.
Nebraska added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning giving them a 4-1 lead which they held on to for the win. Pitcher Ashley Hageman pitched five scoreless innings for Nebraska and improved her record on the season to 4-1.
Chandler led the Beavers from the plate going 1-for-1 with a run scored and two walks. Cavestany went 1-for-4 and drove in the Beaver's lone run of the game.
Oregon State's 4-1 start to the 2011 season is the best start to a season since 2004 when it went 6-1 to start the season.
Oregon State next hits the field when they travel to Palm Springs, Calif. to take part in the annual Cathedral City Classic. They face off with Florida State, Feb. 24 starting at 12:30 p.m.
