Women's Hoops Falls to USC despite Martin's Six Threes

Corvallis, Ore. – Freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) sank a career-high six three-pointers to tally 18 points, but the Oregon State women's basketball team (8-15, 1-11) fell to the USC Women of Troy (14-8, 6-5), 70-51, on Thursday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
Martin scored 12 of her points in the first half, finishing 50 percent from beyond the arc, adding a pair of assists. Overall she chalked up three steals and a blocked shot. Junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) was the other Oregon State player to reach double-digits in the points column with 10 with a team-high six rebounds and four assists.
The Beavers struck first in a fast break layup by Marchbanks in just under a minute of play. The Women of Troy tied it up with a pair of free throws before taking a slim two-point lead. But redshirt freshman Jenna Dixon (Portland, Ore.) quickly gave the lead back to Oregon State with a three-pointer from the left corner at 5-4.
Martin sparked a 15-4 run, hitting four long range shots of her six total attempts in the first 12 minutes of play. Dixon tallied another three in the run, while sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.) tallied a three-point play of her own the old fashioned way, being fouled on a layup, giving Oregon State the 26-15 edge.
USC chipped away at the Oregon State lead, led by Briana Gilbreath's five points down the stretch, but a coast-to-coast basket by freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) and the Beavers' seventh three-pointer by redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) gave Oregon State a 32-26 lead at halftime.
The Women of Troy opened up the second half on a 5-0 run before Martin hit her third three-pointer to put Oregon State back up by four at 35-31. USC took a slim three-point lead, but Marchbanks quickly erased the deficit on a wide open three-pointer at the top of the arc with the score tied at 42.
But the Beavers were unable to count another field goal for a long stretch before Martin hit her sixth three-pointer of the game with just over two minutes to play. But USC had already built a 63-48 lead. And despite another long ball from Indendi, the Women of Troy seven unanswered points before it to hit 70 to clinch the win.
The Women of Troy were led by Gilbreath with the only double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Oregon State shots 46.7 percent (7-15) from three-point range in the first half, but despite good looks in the second half, the Beavers only shot 25 percent (4-16). The Beavers outscored the Women of Troy in points off turnovers 12-10, and USC turned the ball over 15 times to Oregon State's 13.
Oregon State will host No. 9 UCLA next at home in legendary Gill Coliseum. Saturday also marks the Pink Zone game, where fans that purchase a pink hat will receive free admission into the game. · Freshman Alyssa Martin earned her 18th double-digit points game with 18.
· Martin set a new career-high for three-point baskets made with six, tying the season-high. And her 13 attempts are the most she's had in one game this season.
· Martin's 56 three-pointers are good for No. 7 all-time on the single season list.
· Junior Earlysia Marchbanks tallied her seventh double-digit points game with 10.
