Marchbanks' Double-Double Not Enough in Beavers' Loss to North Texas

Houston, Texas – Senior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) counted her first double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Oregon State women's basketball team (5-1) lost to North Texas (5-2), 60-53, in the first game of the Gene Hackerman Invitational on Friday evening.
After getting off to a slow start, freshman Ali Gibson (Woodbridge, Calif.) was the team's second-leading scorer with eight points and nine rebounds. Three Oregon State players scored six points, led by junior Thais Pinto's (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) perfect 3-of-3 from the field and eight rebounds.
The Beavers had spurts of scoring runs but overall struggled from the field, shooting only 31.7 percent, connecting on 19-of-60 attempts. From three-point range, the team shot 15.4 percent on 26 attempts.
But the team led overall in rebounds (45-42), blocked shots (6-1) and steals (8-5), also committing one fewer turnover than North Texas.
Oregon State started off sharp with junior Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) sinking her first three-pointer of the game to give the team the early three-point edge.
And after trading buckets back and forth, Oregon State broke away going on a 9-2 run, all points scored by Marchbanks, to earn its largest lead of the half at 18-13. But the Beavers struggled after that point, only counting one more field goal in the last 11:55 of the half.
The team was held to its lowest point total this season at the half, trailing 24-32, shooting only 32.1 percent to North Texas' 42.9 percent and counting only nine field goals. But the team won the battle of the boards, tallying 22 to the Mean Green's 17.
Coming out of the break, North Texas opened with a 4-0 run to build its lead to 12. Sophomore Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) provided an offensive spark off the bench in her nine minutes played, scoring six points and getting to the line three times.
The Beavers cut the Mean Green's lead down to five, but were unable to get any closer despite five shot attempts in the final seconds of the game, three from beyond the arc.
Brittney Hudson led the Mean Green with 16 points, while Tamara Torru had a team-high eight rebounds.
Oregon State will take on the loser of the Rice/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi game at 3:00 p.m. PT on Saturday in Tudor Fieldhouse to play for third place.
Oregon State Notes: Junior Sage Indendi moved to ninth all-time for three-pointers, counting 79 career, four on the season.
