Corvallis, Ore. - In her Gill Coliseum debut, freshman Ali Gibson (Woodridge, Calif.) led the Oregon State women's basketball team to an 83-34 exhibition win over Pacific (Ore.) on Tuesday evening in front of a crowd of 708.
"It was really exciting," Gibson said. "I was really excited to play and the leaders on the team made me comfortable. Once I got on the court I just felt really comfortable in the offense and they were really supportive."
Gibson scored a game-high 18 points with sophomore Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) racking up 12 points of her own and junior ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley (Lapwai, Idaho) knocking down all four free throws of her 14 total points to all reach double-digits.
The Beavers controlled the tip and scored the first bucket of the game with Gibson scoring on a layup. Pacific took the slim lead on a three, but the Beavers silenced the Boxers for over eight minutes, only allowing Pacific six field goal attempts during the stretch, scoring 16 points in the process to lead 18-5.
With Pacific going on a short 4-0 run, Oregon State quickly went on a 7-0 run of its own, sparked by Martin's pair of three-pointers.
A backdoor cut by Martin for a layup, followed by a Gibson fast break layup closed out the first half with the Beavers leading the Boxers, 37-15.
Oregon State opened up the second half 14-0 run to build its lead to as many as 36 at the 51-15 mark. Pacific scored a handful of times but was unable to string more than five points together as the Beavers went on runs at least six points or more.
"We didn't play the scoreboard; we just kept battling," head coach Scott Rueck said. "That is what we want. We talk about playing at the same level all the time and a high level, never dipping, not letting the circumstances impact how we play or our level of intensity and execution. And I thought tonight we did that. I thought we stayed at that level all night long.
It was really fun to get out and be on the court in front of people and get to see some of our new people just get comfortable out there and I thought that happened as the game went on."
Edwards-Teasley scored the final basket of the game, battling down low to lay it in to give the Beavers the final 49-point advantage over the Boxers.
Oregon State shot 58.9 percent to Pacific's 26.0, while tallying 21 steals and six blocks. Twenty-seven of the Beavers' 33 made baskets were assisted with senior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) earning a best seven.
Pacific's Erica Schultz scored a team-high eight points, while Paige Jensen pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
Oregon State plays its first regular season contest against Western Oregon on Friday at 12:00 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. Friday's game is also Kids' Day, where kids 12 and under will receive free admission, while the cost for everyone else is only $2.
