Five Players Reach Double-Digits in Beavers' School Record Win over Western Oregon

Corvallis, Ore. – Five Oregon State women's basketball players reached double-digits in the points column, led by senior Earlysia Marchbanks' (Salem, Ore.) 15, as the Beavers (1-0) set the school record for the largest margin of victory in school history with a 96-32 win over Western Oregon (0-1) Friday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,423.
“I really liked the very beginning of the game, and then we hit a little drought,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “Credit to Western Oregon. They did a nice job battling us and were physical inside. We obviously have advantages in speed and size, which was the difference. It was nice to see us get comfortable. We executed the second half better offensively, which is normal for a team just starting out.”
Sophomore Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) tallied 13 points, while junior ShaKiana Edwards-Teasley (Lapwai, Idaho) and freshman Ali Gibson (Woodbridge, Calif.) both counted 12. Junior Patricia Bright (Phoenix, Ariz.) rounded out the group with 10.
Edwards-Teasley added 11 rebounds to earn her first career double-double of the team's 52. Oregon State finished the day with a 52-21 advantage. Bright shot a perfect 5-for-5 with four rebounds and a block.
“One of the things we challenged our team with was rebounding,” Rueck said. “The other night we beat Pacific by nine on the boards, and today we outrebounded Western by 31. That was the focal point for us, and the direction we need to go this season. I was very pleased today with the intensity that we played with all game and how we competed on the boards.”
Oregon State easily won the tip-off with Bright not only winning the jump but also scoring the first points on an easy dish inside for the layup. Western Oregon took its only lead of the game on a three-pointer by Lorrie Clifford, but the Beavers one-point deficit was quickly erased by a Marchbanks three-pointer.
Marchbanks led all scorers with her 14 points with Oregon State going on runs to build its lead to as many as 26, while Western Oregon stayed in the game solely by getting to the free throw line, making 10 of its 12 attempts.
The Beavers held the Wolves to 4-for-24 shooting, scoring 15 of their 41 first half points off 12 Western Oregon turnovers on eight steals. Oregon State on the other hand finished shooting 53 percent, converting 16 times on 30 attempts.
Opening the second half, Oregon State opened on an 8-0 run with back-to-back buckets by Bright to start things off. The Wolves' Dana Goularte scored the team's only points early in the second half, while Oregon State ran up the score, counting 15 before Western Oregon's next points.
Western Oregon didn't make a trip to the free throw line in the second half and only was able to tally six field goals with the last coming at the 3:33 mark as Oregon State finished the game on a 14-0 run to fall just shy of the 100-point mark.
The Beavers shot 56.3 percent to the Wolves' 19.6 percent, while chalking up 36 field goals, 20 assisted, to 10. Oregon State earned 20 steals and four blocks, scoring 62 of its points in the paint; 42 total off of Western Oregon's 28 turnovers.
Western Oregon's Rylee Peterson was the lone player to reach double-digits with 11 points.
Oregon State wraps up the weekend against Montana State at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
