CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman Anica Yoo fired an even-par 72 to help give the Oregon State women's golf team the clubhouse lead after the first round on Monday at the 30th Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash.
The Beavers finished with a 10-over 298 to lead the 12-team tournament that is being played at the par-72, 6,063-yard Sahalee Country Club. Colorado and California are tied for second after posting an 11-over 299, while Oregon is fourth with a 13-over 301 and host Washington is fifth with a 15-over 303.
"Today we played well, especially from tee to green," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander. "I am proud of their preparation for this event. We will continue to stay vigilant with our preparation to play and our focus during play. How you start an event is important, but how you finish it is more important to building success in our program."
Yoo had two birdies and two bogeys and is tied for second individually and just two shots back of leader Alex Stewart from Colorado. Sophomore Seshia Telles is tied for eighth after shooting a 2-over 74, while senior Whitney French and sophomore Lauren Sewell both finished with a 4-over 76 to round out the scoring for the Beavers.
"My short game helped me a lot since I only the green half the time today," Yoo said. "I have been struggling with my long game but the coaches helped me trust my wing when I'm standing over the ball."
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
