Corvallis, Ore. - Despite leading through most of the game, the Oregon State women's basketball team (7-7, 0-3 Pac-10) fell in the final seconds to Washington (6-6, 1-2 Pac-10), 55-52, on Thursday evening in front of a crowd of 1,224 in legendary Gill Coliseum.
Freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) scored a game-high 19 points, adding three assists and four steals, while senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) had six rebounds and five blocks.
Greer put the Beavers on the board first with a put back layup in under 30 seconds after the tip-off. The Beavers limited the Huskies to just a pair of buckets by Mackenzie Argens to Oregon State's nine points.
Both teams were cold from the field with Washington able to score a couple of baskets to make it a one-point game at 9-8 going into the third media timeout with 7:24 left to go in the half.
The Beavers held the lead through most of the first half, holding a slim lead over the Huskies before a Kristi Kingma three-pointer gave Washington its first lead of the night at 18-17. But Martin quickly regained the lead for Oregon State on her third bucket beyond the arc to give the Beavers the two-point edge.
Freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) completed the three-point play on a fast break bucket, able to lay it in despite having Charmaine Barlow on her back to give Oregon State the 23-18 lead. A late field goal by Marjorie Heard put the score at 23-20 going into the half.
Junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) scored five quick points to start off the second half, but Kingma quickly erased the deficit on three straight three-pointers to tie the game at 33 all.
But redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) quickly put the Beavers back up by three on her first basket of the night that bounced around before finally falling to spark a 14-4 Oregon State run, including a pair of possible three-point plays by Martin and sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.), to give the Beavers the 47-37 lead with under eight minutes to play.
The Beavers built their lead to as many as 13 at the 52-39 mark on a fast break layup by Bostick, holding a double-digit lead until Kingma hit her fifth three-pointer of the game to make it 52-45 heading into the final media timeout.
Barlow hit a follow-up three before a put back shot by Heard made it a two-point game at 52-50. Washington tied it up on a layup with just under two minutes to go before taking a one-point lead on a Heard made free throw with 1:10 remaining.
Down one with possession by the Oregon State bench, Martin put the ball in play with Oregon State unable to convert on a three-pointer. The Beavers were forced to foul, and Washington's Mercedes Wetmore hit both of her free throws to give the Huskies the final margin of victory.
Washington's Kristi Kingma led the Huskies with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Beavers shot 40.0 percent (21-49) from the field, but struggled from three-point range, hitting only 25.0 percent (7-28) of their shots. Washington shot 42.9 percent (21-49) and outrebounded the Beavers 36-27.
