Men's Rowing Open Four Crew Shines at IRA Championships

CHERRY HILL, New Jersey – The Oregon State men's rowing team raced its first races of the IRA championships this on Thursday as the varsity 8+ squad concluded action by qualifying for the “C” finals on Thursday while the open-four squad raced to a second-place finish to automatically qualified for semi-finals.
Against the top teams in the nation, the No. 18 varsity eight+ team took sixth in the opening and raced their way to fifth-place in the afternoon's repechage.
“We had a good start and stayed with the pack for the first 1,000 meters before some injuries caught up with us,” head coach Steve Todd said.
The open-four crew performed well in their race, taking second to Washington while defeating Yale, Navy and Dartmouth.
“They fought hard in their heat and qualified directly to the semi-finals,” said Todd of the young crew, all of whom have not competed at nationals before.
The freshman eight crew placed fifth in their heat this morning, narrowly losing to Navy by a second. They came back strong in the repechage to take third place.
“I think the team had a real change of attitude after the first race,” Todd said. “They came out focused and did a great job in the repechage.”
Oregon State returns to action when the open-four crew and freshman eight crews race tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively. The varsity eight will race on Saturday in the “C” Finals.
