NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - Oregon State's 24th-ranked men's golf team finished fourth at the Battle at the Beach Tuesday afternoon. After leading the field for the first two days, the Beavers couldn't keep up the pace in the final 18 holes as the tournament host, No. 14 UCLA was 7-under par on the final day to win the tournament.
It was another beautiful day with great scoring conditions. The Beavers got off to a slow start, but then battled back to find themselves sharing the lead with Washington throughout most of the round until the final three holes where UCLA and Arkansas made a late run.
"Coming down the stretch we didn't hit the shots we needed to and we weren't able to make the putts that we needed to in order to win the tournament," head coach Brian Watts said. "Unfortunately we were five-over par the last three holes and that was the difference in finishing fourth and winning the tournament. I felt coming down the stretch we were trying to not make mistakes instead of staying aggressive. Overall, the team played well and we will take a lot of positives from the tournament and continue to work hard. We have ten days to prepare for USC's event, and we're looking forward to getting back down to the Los Angeles area to compete in another great event."
The Beavers finished the tournament with a score of 5-under (348, 355,357) 1060. Senior Diego Velasquez tied for third best individual score with a 7-under (66, 72, 68) 206, just one stroke behind Chris Williams of Washington and David Lingmerth of Arkansas.
Oregon State also had a solid tournament from seniors Mike Barry, who was 1-over Tuesday and finished at 6-under (66, 69, 72) 207, and Paul Peterson, who finished at even par (73, 69, 71) 213 in his first event since returning from a shoulder injury in the fall.
The rest of the Beavers finished above par. Sophomore Alex Moore shot 3-over on Tuesday to finish at 2-over (69, 72, 74) 215. Freshmen Nick Sherwood was also 3-over Tuesday and finished at 8-over (74, 73, 74) 221, and sophomore Morten Madsen finished the third day with his best round of the tournament at 1-over to finish at 10-over (76, 75, 72) 223.
Upon the conclusion of the tournament, Velasquez and Barry were named to the Battle at the Beach all-tournament team.
The Beavers have next week off before competing at the USC Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif., March 1-2.
