No. 24 Men's Golf Maintains First Place Through 36 Holes

NEWPORT COAST, Calif. - The 24th ranked men's golf team maintained first place on the second day of the Battle at the Beach. Oregon State leads the tournament after 36 holes at 7-under (348, 355) 703. The Beavers remain one stroke ahead of No. 6 Washington.
Despite holding the lead, it was a decidedly difficult round according to head coach Brian Watts.
"Today was a frustrating day for us," Watts said. "There were points where we had it going pretty well, and then we'd have a double bogey here and there. It's a golf course where there is no let up. Every shot, you've got to be on."
Leading the way for the Beavers was senior Paul Peterson, just a day after Watts had described him as "over excited" in his first round after returning from a shoulder injury. Peterson came out Monday and posted a 2-under 69, and is at even par (73, 69) 142 after 36 holes. Playing in his first tournament since his injury, Peterson had a nice day going, even notching an eagle on the eighth hole. The one set back to his day came on the 15th hole when he was stung with a double bogey.
Another strong round from seniors Mike Barry (1-under 70) and Diego Velasquez (E 71) kept the Beaver's on top of the tournament.
Rounding out the Beaver's scores were sophomores Alex Moore with a 1-over 72 and Morten Madsen with a 4-over 75, and freshmen Nick Sherwood shot a 2-over73.
With the hole positions expected to be more difficult for the final round than in the first two days, Watts expects his players to be facing 10-20 foot putts rather than 5-10. He'll preach patience on the course looking toward Tuesday and hopes to come out on top.
"I can't really complain when they have a shot to win to win the tournament, that's what you play for. We just need to clean up a few things. We lost some shots coming down the line and we put the ball in the wrong positions. We just have got to clean up a few of the mistakes we made today and we'll be fine."
The Beavers will tee-off the last day of the tournament Tuesday at 8:30 am. Live stats will be available on Golfstat.
