Dec. 31, 2010
Tempe, Ariz. – Freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) and redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) combined for 36 of the Oregon State women's basketball team's 46 points, but the Arizona State Sun Devils squeaked by with the 49-46 win on Friday evening in each team's Pac-10 opener in Wells Fargo Arena.
Martin scored nine of her 16 in the last 4:30 of the game, while Indendi shot 8 of 10 and was a perfect 4-for-4 in three-point range.
Oregon State (7-5, 0-1) opened up the game in control, winning the tip before freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) hit a short baseline jumper to take the early 2-0 lead. Arizona State (9-2, 1-0) came back to take a slim 5-2 lead but the Beavers quickly answered back in the form of a 6-0 run, holding the Sun Devils scoreless for over four minutes.
The Beavers built their biggest lead of the game at 8-5 before Arizona State broke the drought and regained the lead. But Oregon State wouldn't let Arizona State build too big of a lead, staying within three points throughout the first half.
After being held scoreless for nearly six minutes, Martin hit a big three-pointer from the wing to make it a tie ball game at 19. Stealing Arizona State's inbounds pass, Indendi gave Oregon State the lead for the first time since the 12:12 mark.
The Sun Devils' Janae Fulcher hit a bucket with 1:11 to tie the game with the score standing at 21 all heading into halftime.
Arizona State started the second half on a 3-0 run before Indendi scored the Beavers' first points at the 16:46 mark on a short pull-up jumper in the paint to make it 23-24 heading into the first media timeout.
Kali Bennett made it a three-point game again on a layup, but once again Indendi answered for the Beavers with a three-pointer to make it 26 all. Indendi added another three with Martin putting in a layup to give Oregon State a short 8-0 run to take the largest lead for either team of the night at 31-26.
The Beavers continued to hold on to a slim lead before Arizona State went on a 10-2 run, sparked by Pac-10 Player of the Week Dymond Simon's two three-pointers, giving the Sun Devils a 41-37 lead.
Martin had the hot hand down the final stretch, scoring Oregon State's last nine points but a final shot at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim with the game going to the Sun Devils.
Arizona State's Kimberly Brandon paced the Sun Devil offense with 19 points, earning the only double-double of the game with 11 rebounds.
Oregon State shot 42.2 percent (19-45) from the field, just shy of its 42.6 percent season high, while the Sun Devils were held to 35.1 percent (20-57). The Beavers were also 42.9 percent (6-14) from three-point range to Arizona State's 26.3 percent (5-19).
