Corvallis, Ore. – Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) earned her second double-double of the week with freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) adding 18 points, but the Oregon State women's basketball team (5-3) came up short against Pepperdine (5-4), 57-54, on Friday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
“I credit to Pepperdine tonight for coming and doing a great job,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “I thought they defended us really well. They took us out of what we wanted to run. A lot of the night they kept us out of our comfort zone. I thought we scrambled pretty well at times to survive offensively, and then they just made shots down the stretch that were big shots and basically made more plays than we did. I was proud of our team for battling back after a really slow start tonight.”
Greer tallied 13 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks on 5 of 7 shooting. Eight of her 10 boards came on the offensive end. Martin shot 4 of 9 beyond the arc with five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Pepperdine jumped out to an early 10-2 lead behind two big three-pointers by Katie Menton, but Oregon State chipped away at the Waves' lead with Martin hitting two shots beyond the arc to get the Beavers back in the game.
The two teams traded leads with Oregon State taking its first lead at 17-15 on freshman Alexis Bostick's (Oakland, Calif.) three-pointer. Pepperdine quickly regained the lead before Martin tied the game up before Greer hit back-to-back shots coupled with a jumper by freshman Classye James (Palo Alto, Calif.) to give the Beavers a slim four-point edge at 28-24.
The Beavers continued to hang onto their lead, building it to 34-28 at the half after a pair of baskets by redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) and a free throw by Greer.
Both teams struggled to find the basket in the second half with the Beavers retaining the lead through most of the half with neither team holding more than a four-point lead after 17:52 left to go.
Pepperdine regained the lead, building it to four at 52-48 with 6:09 left but Oregon State quickly tied it on a pair of Martin free throws and a layup by sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.). Pepperdine's Lauren Bell made it a three-point game at 54-57 with 1:37 remaining.
The Beavers had a pair of opportunities to score with under a minute remaining, but a last second shot by Indendi came up short as time expired.
Pepperdine forced 22 Beaver turnovers to its 13, scoring 28 points of turnovers. But Oregon State outshot the Waves 38 percent to 36.5 percent.
The Waves' were paced by Jazmine Jackson, Menton and Bell with nine points each. Jackson added eight rebounds.
Oregon State has a week off before heading to Weber State on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 11:00 a.m. PT.
