Corvallis, Ore. – Battling back from a fourteen-point deficit to just one in the final seconds, the Oregon State women's basketball team (6-4) lost a 62-61 heartbreaker to Southern Utah (6-5) on Friday evening in Centrum Arena.
Junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) led all scorers with 18 points with freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) adding 17. Freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) rounded out the group with 10 points of her own.
Marchbanks added a team-high six boards, while senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) had a game-high four blocked shots.
Marchbanks had the hot hand early for the Beavers scoring seven of the team's 10 points at the first media timeout. Oregon State held the Thunderbirds off until the 14-15 mark when Caitlyn Sears led Southern Utah on a short 6-0 run to make it a 14-19 game.
The Thunderbirds held the lead through the rest of the first half despite the Beavers working to narrow the gap with their own answers to the Southern Utah offense but still trailing 35-32 at the half.
Oregon State tied things up early on Martin's second three-pointer of the game, but the Thunderbirds went on an 8-0 run heading into the first media break with 14:37 left in the game with a 43-35 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Thunderbirds continued to build on their lead with a 6-0 run until a short baseline jumper by redshirt freshman Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) followed by a three-point play by Marchbanks pulled the game back within 10 at 39-49.
The Beavers cut Southern Utah's lead to seven at 44-51, but with 3:52 remaining, the Thunderbirds still held at 60-50 lead with Marchbanks completing the three-point play to bring the Beavers within nine.
A 7-0 run strung together by Oregon State brought the Beavers within two at 58-60 before a short jumper by Southern Utah made it a four-point game at 62-58. Redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) hit a clutch three-pointer to make it a one-point game. And after scrambling for a steal to regain possession, a final layup attempt came up short with the 62-61 score standing.
The Thunderbirds narrowly outshot the Beavers 41.1 percent to 39.7 percent, and Oregon State was outrebounded 47 to 28.
Oregon State racked up 17 steals led by Greer and Marchbanks' three each, while Bostick, Indendi and Martin had three assists each.
