Martin Sparks Women's Basketball Season Opener Win over Long Beach State

Corvallis, Ore. – Freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) shot 5-for-7 beyond the arc, 9-for-12 overall, to spark the Oregon State women's basketball (1-0), 71-39 win over Long Beach State (0-1) on Saturday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum in front of a crowd of 1,532.
“We talked about expecting anything tonight,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “We didn't know what kind of defense they would play. Alexis Bostick did a great job handling their pressure, getting the ball where it needed to go and everyone else did a great job once they got it. I was really proud of that composure tonight.”
Tonight what we did defensively allowed us to score that much on offense. It allowed us to be opportunistic offensively. We ran well tonight and had good patience when we needed it so I was really proud of the team's effort.”
Freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) also reached double-digits with 14 points, scoring three of her four total field goals in three-point range. Sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.) had a near double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) scored the first points of the game with a put-back layup, indicative of how the game would progress. The Beavers sank their next two shots to take the early 8-0 lead in less than five minutes and didn't look back in the first half, forcing 16 turnovers and counting 12 steals.
Long Beach State put up 12 points before being held scoreless for 6:19 before Janae Coffee found the basket to make it a nine-point game again, but a pair three-point buckets by Martin and Bostick helped boost the Beavers' lead to 28-14 at the half.
Oregon State's momentum carried into the second half with the Beavers starting on a 9-0 run, getting baskets from three different players before Long Beach State's Ashley Bookman ended the 49ers near seven-minute scoring drought with a layup.
Martin continued to be the hot shooter, sinking five of seven attempts from three-point range and racking up 24 total points on the court her father, Earl Martin, completed his career on 10 years earlier.
“It is cool,” Martin said. “I was definitely nervous in the beginning. But once the game started, it was just about playing your game.”
The wide margin allowed the Beavers to clear their bench with all nine players getting time on the court. Redshirt freshman Jenna Dixon (Portland, Ore.) knocked down a pair of three-pointers in her eight minutes of time. Junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) tallied six rebounds and three rebounds, adding four points, while redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) knocked down back-to-back three-pointers early in the game.
Long Beach State's Bookman was the lone 49er to reach double digits with 12 points, also leading the team with six boards.
Oregon State heads to Hawai'i next for the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic. The Beavers will face Eastern Michigan first on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
