Honolulu, Hawai'i – Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) blocked a career-best six balls, adding 13 boards to pace the Oregon State women's basketball team's defense to a 59-44 victory over Eastern Michigan (1-2) on Friday evening in the first game of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Greer nearly recorded her second career double-double with eight points, shooting 50 percent from the field. Redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) led all shooters with 14 points and 5-for-7 shooting with freshmen Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) and Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) backing her up with 12 points each.
With time on the shot clock running out, sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.) sank her first career three-pointer along the baseline to give the Beavers the early 3-0 edge. The Eagles made a pair of trips to the free throw line to score their first three points of the game for the first tie.
Oregon State (2-0) answered back in the form of back-to-back buckets by senior Greer and Indendi to regain the lead at 8-5. But Eastern Michigan responded with an 11-0 run to lead the Beavers at 20-9 with 8:00 remaining in the half.
Freshman Classye James (Palo Alto, Calif.) found her stroke, knocking down a couple of threes in back-to-back possessions to bring the Beavers back within five at the third media timeout with Indendi continuing it with another three of her own to make it a two-point game at 18-20 before finally tying it up again at 22 all with 3:39 to play.
Eastern Michigan built its lead back up to four off a pair of buckets by Kristin Thomas and India Hairston, but junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) made it a two-point game on a bucket in the paint with three seconds remaining with the 24-26 score standing at the half.
Coming out of the break, Bostick was the hot shooter with a pair of wide open baskets beyond the arc to give the Beavers the lead, supplemented by two free throws by Martin, to make it 32-28.
Martin widened the gap to six on a fast break jumper at the wing with Greer doing work on the defensive end to count her fourth block of the game.
Indendi continued on her hot streak, counting two more three-pointers after the first media timeout to give Oregon State its biggest lead of the night at 42-30, forcing Eastern Michigan to take a short break. The Eagles came back within eight until Bostick and Greer took over, leading Oregon State on a slim 6-2 run to give the Beavers a 12 point lead again at 48-36.
Eastern Michigan struggled to find a way to overcome the tough Beaver defense that forced seven turnovers and held the Eagles to just 21 percent shooting. Martin and Misa put the game away with a three and pair of points from the charity stripe in the last minute.
Eastern Michigan's Hairston led the Eagles with 12 points, while senior guard Cassie Schrock led the rebounding game with seven boards, also earning her 1,000th career point, finishing with seven total.
