Stanford, Calif. – Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) and freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) both earned eight kills each to lead the Oregon State volleyball team, but the Beavers fell in three to the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal on Friday evening. Set scores were 15-25, 17-25, 19-25.
Sawatzky added five digs and four blocks, while Kressl had four blocks of her own, including a pair of solo blocks.
“To compete against the No. 1 team in the country, we have to be at the top of our game,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “And two areas that we really kind of lost the battle tonight in were serving and some untimely ball handling mistakes. I thought the real positive was we blocked well against them, especially with great hitters in Alix Klineman and Hayley Spelman. I thought Mona Kressl had a really good attacking match. We just have to keep working harder and we have to be ready for Cal.
The Beavers (8-9, 1-2 Pac-10) struggled to get into an offensive rhythm against the Cardinal (12-0, 3-0 Pac-10), tallying only 34 kills. Sophomore Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) added six kills, while sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) had five.
Defensively, Oregon State outblocked Stanford 9.5 to 5.0 with Sawatzky, Kressl and sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) all tallying four blocks each. Sophomore Alyssa O'Neil (West Linn, Ore.) led the backcourt defense with 15 digs adding the team's only ace, while freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) added 10 digs.
Stanford's Alix Klineman paced all hitters with 16 kills, while Gabi Ailes matched that number in digs.
Oregon State completes play in the Bay Area at No. 8 California on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
