Men's Rowing Completes San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 15th ranked Oregon State men's Varsity 8+ crew finished third in the Petite Finals of the Copley Cup and two other Beaver boats raced in their respective Grand Finals at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday.
The V8+ crew got the day started for the Beavers in the Petite Finals. Boats from No. 10 Yale, No. 13 Syracuse, and Oregon State led the pack off the start, with Yale taking an early lead. All six of the crews in the race were practically even through the first 500 meters before Yale began to establish a lead. Syracuse made a push for first while Oregon State was left to fend off Michigan for third place. The Wolverines used a strong second 500 meters to take third place away from OSU, but the Beavers recovered in the second half of the race to take third by a narrow margin of 1.45 seconds.
"The Varsity 8+ knew it had some good crews to race today," said head coach Steve Todd. "The four other boats in the race made for a good field. We raced a strong body of the race, and we came within a length of Yale. We just need to keep working on improving and getting faster as the season goes on."
The Freshman 8+ race was dominated by Pac-10 crews from Washington and Cal, who pulled away from the pack off the start. Stanford and Orange Coast College battled for third, while Oregon State took a small lead over British Columbia. The Beavers pushed their lead to a boat-length at the 1000 meter mark, and held on over the second half of the race for fifth place.
Oregon State's Open 8+ got off to a rough start in their race, falling behind off the start. The crew battled back and put together a solid race the rest of the way and finished in fourth place, just 3.43 seconds out of third place.
The Beavers will now take two weeks off to prepare for their trip to Redwood Shores, Calif. to take on defending IRA champion Wisconsin, as well as Pac-10 rivals Stanford and Cal. Check back with osubeavers.com for the latest rowing news.
