OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Craig Robinson
What can you take away from a game like this?
Well, what you can take from it is that we were trying to do some different things before we get ready for the season. I'll take more than half the blame for the way we played. We were trying to make it as stressful as possible because it's going to be hard going forward. If we won by 50, that could be worse than winning by 20. You know you are making progress when you have a locker room as quiet as that after you won by 20. That's good for us.
What were some of the ways the game was made more difficult?
Well, when you play against teams in exhibitions games, you don't have the scouting report. So, we tried to let the guys figure it out on their own. You don't give them all the answers to the test, that's one way. The other way is, when the game is going on, and things are going bad, don't let them off the hook by calling a timeout. There were some times there where I would have called a timeout and put the starters back in the game. We want to have a team that has a lot of depth. In order to do that, you have to get guys into games that weren't here last year and see if they can handle it.
On the player rotation throughout the game…
That's all part of the game plan. We wanted to try some new things before we got to the regular season. We're still trying to figure out who's going to be in that rotation. It's good to show guys that their spot isn't guaranteed. Not yet.
What were the differences between Western and Southern Oregon?
Western Oregon is more athletic. They're a bigger team and a higher division so we knew the play would be more physical, which is good for us. We like teams that play similar to us. They switch up their defense, play man to man. It was good for us; and, hopefully, it was good for them.
OREGON STATE JUNIOR Omari Johnson
On the game…
“I think it could have been a little better. We could have executed a little better on offense. All in all, it was an alright offensive display. We should have made more threes, or taken less, either one.”
On an early season tournament with three games in a weekend…
“Its good right off the bat to test our conditioning. We're not worried about the game after Friday, we're just worried about Friday itself. Hopefully, the outcome will be a win.”
OREGON STATE JUNIOR Calvin Haynes
On the game…
“I feel that we needed to execute better from the free-throw line. We missed a lot of free-throws. We missed a lot of lay-ups, a lot of easy baskets. We turned the ball over a little too much. We didn't rebound like we should have. The offense could have been more crisp.”
On what needs to be done with all the things that went wrong…
“Coach Robinson said we're happy that we got this play out of the way now. If this would have been a Division I team, the score could have gone either way. We didn't play up to our abilities today. We're looking to get better every day. Monday we will come back with a new attitude, ready to go.”
On going to Texas next week…
“We're ready to get this season kicked off. We've got to let everyone know we're ready for business.”
