OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Craig Robinson
Thoughts on the first game:
“It's nice to win the games you are supposed to win. Last year we had a tough time with our first exhibition game, and this was a nice change from last year. It was good to see the guys take the early part of this game seriously. What you got to see today is that the depth is really going to help us. Whenever we can rest (guys) we are going to do it.”
On the freshmen:
“Angus, as you can see, is a big strapping kid who can shoot the ball, can run and is athletic and can get rebounds. He just needs to settle down. He is very excitable, but that is how freshman are. Jared is just as advertised athletically, he has a nice shot, but he just needs to learn how to manage a game as a guard. He played combo guard most of his high school career. As you can see on defense, he is athletic who is capable of guarding Pac-10 guys.”
On the game compared to practice:
It was a little raggedy for our standards, but it was definitely good to get on the court and play a game. We needed to play against different competition. This was refreshing for the guys to play against a good Southern Oregon team. I think in the end we just over-powered them with our depth.”
On what the team needs to work on:
“We have to be a better foul shooting team. In the part of the game that counted, we made our foul shots, but overall we only shot about 60%. You have to respect your foul shot as you do the rest of the game. Of all the things we have worked on over the last two years it is the one area where we are still having trouble.”
OREGON STATE SENIOR Seth Tarver
Thoughts on the first game:
“It felt good to win like that. It's nice to see all the stuff we've been working on in practice work in the game. We had a great game, everyone played well together. It was nice for the new guys, to see what they can do as well. It was an all-around good performance.”
On the exhibition game a year ago vs. exhibition game today:
“Last year everything was new and it was our first time actually putting together everything we'd done in practice. Last year, we barely won our first exhibition game, but everything was new. Now we can just react and act on plays. It's nice to see we carried over from last year.”
On the depth of the team:
“Down the stretch, when we're playing games back to back or every other day we are going to be tired. So, depth will definitely be an issue. It's nice to see that the new guys can contribute physically. They're ready to play at the college level.”
On the freshmen's ability to play in the Pac-10:
“They'll definitely have to learn some things, but physically they're capable. They may make some mistakes, but they'll learn.”
OREGON STATE FRESHMAN Angus Brandt
Thoughts on the first game:
“I thought it was good to see the whole team in action in actual game situations, to see the plays in action and run through everything we have run in practice.”
On playing his first collegiate game:
“Myself and the other freshman have been looking forward to this all summer. We've been working pretty hard. It was good that we all got a chance to get in the game.”
On the transition from high school to college basketball:
“I'm definitely still learning the offense. It's a different offense than I've ever run. I think that once we all get an idea of how to run the offense, as soon as we're able to react, it's going to become second nature. I think myself and all the freshman are going to be able to play a little better because we won't have to think as much.”
