CAMDEN, N.J. - The Oregon State Men's 1st Varsity Eight team completed its season Saturday at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships with a third place finish in the Petite Final. The third place finish left OSU ninth overall and marked the eighth time in 10 years that OSU has finished in the top ten in the nation and the fifth straight.
The Beavers, who entered the regatta ranked 10th in the country, beat 8th-ranked Brown to move up a notch in the final standings. OSU also topped Cornell, Yale and Dartmouth all of which had been ranked higher than the Beaver rowers at points during the season.
"Since we were in the Petite Final, we were just racing for a ranking," said Head Coach Fred Honebein. "Navy and Stanford were ranked above us all year, so we knew this would be a rough race. But we wanted to see if we could close the gap on them and we did."
"Our guys finished having rowed as well as they are capable," said Honebein. "They left everything on the race course, and there is nothing more that I can ask of them."
In other action, OSU's Second Varsity Eight finished fourth in the Third Level Final. The Beavers finished in the trailing position to St. Joseph's and Dartmouth in what was a close race for second through fourth.
"The JV and freshmen learned what is expected and needed to prepare for the final race," said Honebein.
