SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Oregon State was in California for the second straight day, competing at the San Diego Crew Classic. Heat races were completed yesterday, and the finals were held today. The Varsity and JV Eights won their petite finals, while the Novice Eight competed in the grand final and finished 3rd.
Also racing this weekend were the Varsity Four, 2nd Novice 8 and Novice Four, who raced at the Northwest Regional Championship Regatta at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, WA. The Varsity Four finished second in the grand final, sprinting through a strong Gonzaga crew but falling less than one second short of Long Beach. The 2nd Novice 8 made the grand final and finished 6th against other teams' 1st boats, while the Novice Four also made the grand final and finished fourth.
In San Diego, the Varsity Eight led from start to finish in their petite final, which determined places 7-12 in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, finishing in a time of 6:57.9. They held off the charge of Notre Dame who finished in a time of 6:58.56, and 17th-ranked Texas, who finished in a time of 6:59.97.
"I thought it went really well," said Head Coach Charlie Owen. "We had a few things to work on from the heat races, like maintaining our speed in the second 500 meters. They came out in the finals and executed what we planned. They held off a couple tough boats in the last 250 meters and got the win."
The JV Eight led for most of the way in their petite final, winning in a time of 7:04.5. It was a close race with the University of Texas all the way down the course, but the Beavers stayed in control of the race and held on to win their final.
"The JV boat also made some changes after the heat races," Owen said. "They came out and executed their race plan and won a close race."
The Novice Eight finished in third place in the grand final, finishing in a time of 7:12.83. They finished a little over a second after UCLA, who finished in second place.
"The novices did a fantastic job today," Owen said. "They were very competitive with crews that had considerably more experience than we had, and they did it from a less-favorable outside lane. I am really excited to see where they can be in a few weeks at Pac-10s."
This weekend was a good preview of how competitive the Pac-10 will be this year, with California, USC, Washington State, UCLA, and Stanford, as well as Oregon State competing this weekend.
"I think the Pac-10 is really tight this year," said Owen, "Washington hasn't raced yet, but they look to be fast. California looked really good this weekend, and the other Pac-10 teams all raced well. I think spots three through seven are all really close, and anybody could finish anywhere."
"Overall, I was happy with all the boats this weekend," Owen said. "You can look for us to continue this progress over the next couple weeks."
Oregon State's next novice race is April 9 at the Covered Bridge Regatta in Eugene, Oregon at Dexter Lake. The varsity and 1st Novice 8 race April 16th and 17th, competing against 6th-ranked Virginia and Duke in Charlottesville, VA.
