No. 16 Softball Blows By No. 19 Fresno State, 15-7, And Downs San Diego State, 9-5

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 16 ranked Oregon State softball team pounded 26 hits on the night to come away with a pair of victories in Thursday's opening action at the Campbell-Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State University. The Beavers throttled No. 19 ranked Fresno State University by a 15-7 score, before handing host San Diego State a decisive 9-5 loss.
"These were two great team wins," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "It was exciting to see us come out with the fire to play today."
OSU (6-3) picked up just its second win against FSU (1-1) in the last 10 meetings, by matching the school record for runs scored in a single game with 15.
The Beavers pounded 14 hits in the contest, with junior first baseman Vanessa Iapala going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Iapala finished with a double and a two-run home run. Her four hits ties the Oregon State single game record for hits - a feat she accomplished against Utah on Feb. 13, 2004. Five other Beaver players have tallied four hits in a single game.
The Beavers took an early 5-0 lead in the second inning, helped in part by a two-run home run from junior catcher Lisa Allen.
OSU pushed the lead to 10-0 in the top of the fourth when the Beavers added five more runs on five hits.
Adrienne Alo finished with a 2-for-4 effort from the plate and three runs scored, while Mia Longfellow went 2-for-5 with a double.
Beaver hurler Brianne McGowan (4-1) had seven strike outs in the complete game victory.
Oregon State continued its hitting barrage in the nightcap against host San Diego State (9-2). The Beavers finished with 12 hits in the contest, led by a 3-for-5 performance from Longfellow.
Senior Alana Mendoza went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate with an RBI double, while sophomore Sherina Galvan was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Alo finished with a pair of hits and McGowan belted her team-leading third home run of the year.
The Beavers took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth, but the Aztecs rallied back and eventually closed within a run (6-5) after putting together a three-run sixth inning. McGowan's solo home run to left-center started off a three-run seventh for the Beavers to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore pitcher Ta'Tyana McElroy (1-1) earned the victory while allowing just one run in four innings of work.
Iapala finished the day with a 5-for-9 effort from the plate, while Longfellow and Alo each went 5-for-10.
"Overall we came out and we swung the bat extremely well," said Walker. "Brianne pitched a great ball game and then all three pitchers combined in the second game to give us the W."
Oregon State continues tournament action on Friday with a 10 a.m. game against No. 7 ranked Georgia, followed by a 12 p.m. contest against No. 20 Long Beach State.
