Women's Crew Sends Two Boats To Grand Finals In San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- -
Oregon State's novice and junior varsity eights finished first and second in their respective heats Saturday and will each race in their respective Grand Finals on Sunday at the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
The junior varsity eight placed second behind a fast Washington team by less than four seconds and the novice eight beat out Washington State by just over one second.
"It was really good to see junior varsity and novice advance to grand finals," said OSU head coach Charlie Owen. "They both had great races."
The varsity eight placed fifth in their heat. They will compete in the Petite Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup on Sunday. Washington won that heat with a mark of 6:35.8.
"Varsity overall had a pretty good race, but they came up a little short," Owen said.
"It's hard to say exactly what goes wrong, but some of the other crews got up on us a bit early and we couldn't quite catch up. We'll still have a really tough race tomorrow.
"We have our work cut out for us and we'll see if we can do better tomorrow."
In other action Saturday, OSU sent varsity and novice eights and a novice four to the Husky Invitational on the Montlake Cut. All three teams finished second in their respective races.
