PALO ALTO, Calif. - A two-run third inning helped No. 11 Stanford University knock off No. 16 Oregon State, 2-0, on Friday night in Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
Oregon State falls to 31-10 on the season and 0-2 in the Pac-10, while Stanford improved to 28-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
The game shaped up to be a pitcher's dual from the start between Beaver senior Monica Hoffman and Cardinal senior Dana Sorensen.
Hoffman had tallied six strikeouts through four innings of work, while Sorensen had fanned seven batters, but it was timely hitting by the Cardinal that proved to be the difference in the game.
Stanford used a two-out rally to take the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Catalina Morris belted a triple to the gap in left field that scored Jackie Rinehart and then Morris crossed the plate to make the score 2-0 when Lauren Lappin reached base on an infield single.
Sophomore pinch hitter Ingrid Lochelt led-off the top of the sixth with a single to left field but the Cardinal ended the Beaver threat when Adrienne Alo's line drive shot turned into a double play and Sorensen recorded her eighth strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Hoffman (15-7) finished with eight strikeouts, while Sorensen (16-4) had nine.
Oregon State continues Pac-10 action on Saturday when the Beavers face No. 3 ranked California. Game-time is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Berkeley.
