BERKELEY, Calif. - Oregon State freshmen Dallas Buck, Kevin Gunderson and Jake McCormick combined to pitch a five-hitter as the Beavers beat California 14-3 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond. Chris Campos was 4-for-6 with a home run and six runs batted in for OSU (16-7 overall, 2-1 Pac-10), which scored in each of the first five innings to win the series.
Oregon State now goes to Portland for a non-league game Tuesday at 2 p.m., then returns home next weekend to meet Arizona in a Pac-10 series at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field with games Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. All four games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and on the internet at www.osubeavers.com.
Against Cal (15-17, 3-3), Oregon State picked up a pair of runs in the first inning against starter Matt Brown and then tacked on four unearned runs in the second inning for a 6-0 lead. OSU had an 8-0 lead before the Bears got their first hit off Buck, who was making his first start after beginning the season as the closer and earning five saves.
"Dallas Buck was pretty good," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "I mean, I'm looking at 92-93 miles per hour with a slider and he threw probably a half-dozen changeups for strikes. I was impressed with the guy, to go out there and go after a club like Cal that hammered it pretty good Saturday, and today this ballpark was a bandbox. He pitched his tail off."
Buck went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three. He didn't allow a hit until Justin Nelson's two-out homer in the bottom of the fourth made it 8-1.
"I just went out and threw strikes and let my defense play behind me, and they played great," Buck said of the Beavers, who played errorless defense. As for moving back into a starting role, he said, "I was looking forward to it; I'm a lot more comfortable starting than I am coming in at the end. Closing is fun because you're in a tight game in the ninth, but I'd rather be at the front of the game."
Oregon State had sent Buck to the mound with a 2-0 lead as Campos singled home one run and another scored on a double play. In the second, Brown retired the first two OSU hitters but Chris Kunda reached on an error; that opened the way for a six-run inning that included Mike Lissman's two-run double and Campos' two-run homer that banged off the centerfield wall just above the yellow line marking home run height.
"I didn't know right away that it was out," Campos said. "I hustled hard out of the box; I did see it go over the yellow line and I thought he'd already ruled it a home run so I started jogging. But they hadn't ruled it yet, so I sped up at third base but they finally ruled it a home run."
Campos was batting just .277 going into the game but had been making good contact; the four hits raised his batting average to .321 and he now has three homers.
"I was hitting the ball hard this weekend and it wasn't falling for me, but today it did," said the junior outfielder, who had the first six-RBI game by a Beaver since Andy Jarvis drove in seven runs in an 18-16 win over New Mexico on Feb. 21, 2003. "It feels great to go out there, see the ball, hit the ball and get RBIs - the other guys got on for me and they were in scoring position."
With the 6-0 lead, the Beavers turned their attention to not letting things slip away as they had on Saturday, when OSU scored five runs in the top of the first inning only to lose 11-5.
"I said Friday that I thought our guys attacked the game (in a 15-5 win), and I told them Saturday that I didn't feel we attacked the game," Casey said. "We got a five-run lead on Saturday and then we let them be the aggressors, and we couldn't let that happen today."
Oregon State tacked on single runs in the third, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, then capped things with a three-run top of the ninth. OSU had 16 hits, reaching season-highs with four home runs and 33 total bases.
Jacoby Ellsbury added a 3-for-4 day with a triple, two walks and four runs scored; he extended his hitting streak to 12 games and raised his batting average to .418 this season. Tony Calderon was 3-for-5 with a double and his first homer of the season, while Jenkins had his team-leading fourth homer of the year and Mathews hit his second of the season.
Gunderson worked three innings, giving up just one run on two hits and a walk while striking out three. McCormick got the final two outs; he hasn't allowed an earned run in 15 1/3 innings of work this season.
