CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
The No. 18 Oregon State softball team used a pair of big innings to sweep a doubleheader from Missouri on Monday, winning 11-1 and 3-1 at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Beavers upped their record to 28-8 and ran their win streak to five games, while Missouri fell to 11-18.
In the first game, OSU pounced on the Tigers with eight runs in the second inning to make it 9-0. Sherina Galvan belted her second triple in as many days, knocking in Carrie Syphers and Vanessa Iapala. Catcher Lisa Allen delivered a two-run homerun in the next at-bat, bringing in Galvan.
Allen went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run, and Adrienne Alo and Brianne McGowan tallied doubles.
Ta'Tyana McElroy pitched the final three innings to earn the win and improve to 9-1 after Monica Hoffman pitched two no-hit innings with four strikouts.
Kelly Petersen went 4-for-7 Monday, including a 3-for-4, two-RBI, two-run performance to lead OSU in the 11-1 victory.
The first game was called in the fifth inning when the 8-run rule was invoked.
In the second game, the Beavers capitalized on three passed balls and some solid hitting in the first inning to build a 3-0 lead. Alo, Mia Longfellow and Petersen scored unearned runs, with Petersen driving in Longfellow on a single to right. Alo and Petersen scored on passed balls.
A RBI double from Kendra Power brought Missouri within 3-1 in the fourth, but Hoffman shut the door on any Tiger rally hopes with three perfect innings.
McGowan improved to 5-2 by scattering four hits over four innings, and Hoffman added to her school record with her 11th career save, also her fifth of the year.
OSU swept Kansas in a doubleheader on Sunday, 7-0 and 5-2.
"We earned four big wins this weekend," OSU coach Kirk Walker said. "The Big 12 has some good teams - they swing the bat well.
"It's tough to play back-to-back doubleheaders. I thought we did a nice job, especially in the second game today. We talked before the game about keeping our momentum, and we did that in the first inning."
OSU opens Pacific-10 Conference play at Oregon on Friday at 2 p.m. before hosting a twin bill against Utah State next Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m.
