CORVALLIS, Ore. - Senior guard Leilani Estavan recorded her first career double-double with a season-high 10 assists and 20 points to help Oregon State's women's basketball team to a 69-64 victory against Gonzaga University in Friday's opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
The Beavers (16-14) advance to the WNIT second round for the third straight year and will travel to University of Nebraska (18-11) for a 5 p.m. PST game on Monday.
Gonzaga (18-12) bolted out of the gates to take an early 8-0 lead and held a 25-15 advantage with just under nine minutes to go in the first half.
Back-to-back 3-point field goals from OSU senior Hollye Chapman sparked a 23-4 run for the Beavers to close out the half and take a 38-29 lead into the locker room. Oregon State seniors Brina Chaney, Chapman and Estavan combined to score 22 points during the stretch.
Ashley Burke's 3-pointer with 43 seconds left in the game pulled the Zags within two points (63-61), but the Beavers were a perfect 10-for-10 down the stretch from the free throw line, securing the victory.
OSU finished the game with a 19-for-25 clip from the charity stripe and improved to 14-2 on the season when shooting better than the opposition.
Estavan buried 5-of-12 field goals and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line en route to game-high scoring honors with 20 points. Oregon State's all-time assist leader, Estavan's 10 assists give her 567 career dishes.
"That was a typical performance of Leilani's four years here," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. "She has such a quick cross-over and can get by people to score. She really worked Brina (Chaney) into the offense."
Three other Beavers pitched in 10 points on night - Chapman, Chaney and Shannon Howell. Chapman also matched her career-best with four steals.
Gonzaga had three players reach double figures in scoring with Burke's 17 points leading the attack.
