CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's varsity eight rowed one of its strongest races of the year on Sunday, as the Beavers finished third at the Pacific-10 Championships on the 2,000-meter Lake Natoma course in Sacramento.
The 12-ranked Beavers finished in 6:03.00 and came within 1.11 seconds of knocking off No. 5 Washington, as the two crews battled the entire length of the course. The Beavers never let the UW boat gain more than a three seat lead and were within a nose at the 1,500-meter mark. UW held off OSU's late push though and crossed the line in 6:01.89.
"Our guys did an excellent job today," OSU coach Dave Reischman said of his crew that had to be reshuffled due to an injury Wednesday. "They rowed an excellent race, and I'm proud of them. We threw everything we had at Washington, and as disappointing as it is to lose a race that close, we felt like we left everything we had on the course. We just let them get too big of a lead to come back from all the way, but we started reeling them in at about the halfway point and made a move.
"We've got three weeks to find that 1.1 seconds by the time Nationals roll around.
California, the country's top-ranked crew, won easily with an open-water win in a time of 5:51.79.
The varsity eight won its heat race to earn its lane in the Grand Final, edging out Stanford by over three seconds in 6:17.79.
The junior varsity was a little over seven seconds off Washington's pace in the qualifying heat, as the Beavers took second to advance to the Grand Final, where they turned in a time of 6:26.00 to finish third. Cal took care of Washington by more than seven seconds with a time of 6:03.10 to earn the win.
OSU beat San Diego State and took fifth in the varsity four race, as the Beavers finished in 7:13.70. California, whose program features nine Olympians, ran away with the win in 6:40.70, which was nearly 13 seconds better than Washington's 6:53.39.
The novice eight finished third in its Grand Final, well ahead of Cal-Davis, Stanford and Cal-Santa Barbara. OSU's time of 6:18.29 put them well behind first-place Washington and second-place California, as Washington pulled off the upset in 6:02.00 to win by 3.20 seconds. The novice eight took care of business in its heat race as it blew by Stanford to win by four lengths in 6:25.00.
