No. 10 Men's Crew Runs Into No. 1 Cal

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - - The No. 10 Oregon State men's crew went up against the nation's best when it squared off against California on the 2,000-meter Redwood Shores course on Sunday. OSU came away with a loss in each of its three races, as Cal showed why it is the top-ranked team in the country.
The Beavers rowed a speedy 6:07 in the varsity eight contest, but California finished well ahead in 5:53.
The JV eight turned in a time of 6:25, which was 23 seconds slower than California, while the novice eight lost by 14 seconds with a time of 6:26.
"Cal is certainly a great crew, and they lived up to their billing," OSU coach Dave Reischman commented on the program that features nine Olympians. "We tried to press them a bit, and that didn't work so well. We got a little scrambled and got out of our rhythm, but we've got some things we can work on in practice."
The varsity eight does not row again until the Pac-10 Conference Championships on May 13, but the JV eight, varsity four and novice eight will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the Opening Day Regatta on May 5.
