CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's ninth-inning rally fell short Friday afternoon as the Beavers lost to San Francisco 3-2 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (7-6 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) scored twice in the ninth and had the tying run at second base when the game ended.
The Beavers and Dons (8-5, 0-0 West Coast) continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up Sunday at 1 p.m.. Sunday's game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
Friday's game saw OSU lefthander Scott Nicholson and USF righthander Jesse Foppert in a pitcher's duel, Nicholson went the distance in the loss while Foppert lasted into the ninth inning before David Seccombe picked up the final three outs for the save.
Nicholson fell to 2-1 this season despite throwing an eight-hitter, walking none and striking out six. Foppert improved to 3-0 with eight innings of work, walking one and striking out five, and the win didn't come easily.
Brian Barden led off the ninth with a single for the Beavers, then advanced to third on Curtis Davis' single to right. Bryan Ingram's bunt on a safety squeeze scored Barden to make it 3-1 and move Davis to second, and Ingram beat it out for a single to put the tying run on base.
That was all for Foppert, and Kerisi Reynolds pinch ran at second for Davis. However, Zach Gordon was unable to lay down a sacrifice bunt and Reynolds was picked off second for the first out of the inning. Gordon struck out, then pinch-hitter Pat Stevens then followed with a double to centerfield that scored Ingram from first to make it 3-2. Seccombe then fanned Chris Biles to end the game.
"We just didn't execute the fundamentals of baseball, plain and simple," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "And our guy pitched outstanding."
The Dons nicked Nicholson for a pair of runs in the fourth inning after Taggert Bozied - a second-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins last season - doubled with one out. Jeramy Janz blooped a single into left-center to score Bozied and took second on the throw to the plate, he advanced to third on Foppert's groundball single through the left side and scored on the front end of a double steal for a 2-0 lead.
San Francisco picked up its final run in the seventh inning on Nick Tarbat's two-out single that scored Steve Booth.
Josh Carter was 2-for-4 with a double for OSU, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, and Curtis Davis was 2-for-3 for the Beavers. Foppert was 3-for-4 with a double for San Francisco and Booth was 2-for-3.
