CAMDEN, N.J. - - Even its best time of the season wasn't quite enough to advance the No. 18 Oregon State men's varsity eight to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships semifinal. OSU finished just .08 seconds out of second place in their repechage (second chance race) heat Thursday afternoon on the Cooper River. Only the top-two boats advanced from the repechages to the semifinal race. The varsity eight will row in the Third-Level Final against Marist, Columbia, and Michigan on Saturday.
OSU battled Northeastern to the finish line in their repechage heat to finish in 5:39.09, but Northeastern nosed out OSU with a time of 5:39.01.
"This was a good boat-race," OSU coach Dave Reischman said. "The guys left it all out on the course. They raced hard, but we just came up a little short. I'm proud of them, and they represented the university well. I think back to the great things that have happened, and they all started with disappointment. There was only one senior in the boat, so we'll have everybody else back. It's up to us to make something positive out of this."
The Beavers finished third in their morning heat with a time of 5:51.2, just four seconds behind Penn. California won the heat to advance to the semifinals.
The freshman eight gave California all they could handle in their opening heat, and finished second with a season-best 5:56.07. OSU went on to win the repechage and qualify for Friday's semifinal with a time of 5:57.29, beating second-place Michigan by over seven seconds. The freshmen will face tough competition in their semifinal when they take on Syracuse, Wisconsin, California, Northeastern, and Penn.
The varsity four, rowing together for the first time this season, took third in their heat Thursday morning with a season-low time of 6:39.54. OSU qualified for the semifinals with a second-place showing in their repechage with a 6:40.96. The varsity four, consisting of members of the second-varsity eight boat that were put together for the IRA's, will square off against Brown, Cornell, Wisconsin, Loyola, and Navy in Friday's semifinal.
In the varsity eight competition, California, Brown, Washington, and Wisconsin advanced to the semifinals by winning their preliminary heats, while Princeton, Virginia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Temple, Northeastern, Penn, and Navy advanced from the repechages.
