CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stanford pitcher Maureen LeCocq helped her own cause with a two-run double in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie and help lead the No. 10 Cardinal to a 3-0 win over No. 12 Oregon State in Pacific-10 softball action at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Saturday.
Neither team had scored heading into the seventh inning, and LeCocq and OSU pitcher Crystal Draper had held their opposition to just two hits apiece through six innings.
But Stanford (43-14, 7-10 Pac-10) came through with a couple clutch hits in the seventh to bring things open.
"The difference was they got two key hits when they got a runner on, and we didn't get a hit when we had a runner on. It was timely hitting," said coach Kirk Walker. With one out in the seventh, Stanford's Sara Beeson reached base on an error by OSU's Shannon Sorg. Kellie Wiginton then singled to left field to put runners on first and second before LeCocq doubled to send the two runners across the plate. LeCocq went to third on the throw home and scored when Jenni Shideler hit a grounder to second. Draper struck out Cassi Brangham to end the inning.
The Beavers (36-16-1, 6-10 Pac-10) appeared they might have a rally of their own going when Steph Adams led off with a base hit in the bottom of the seventh. Adams went to second Traci Feldt's grounder to first base, but then Sorg and pinch hitter Shelly Prochaska both grounded to third base to end the game.
OSU finished with three hits for the day. In addition to Adams' base hit in the seventh, the Beavers got a single from Sorg, and Shawna Feldt doubled for the second day in a row. It was her 10th double of the season.
"We are facing the best pitchers in the country so you're not going to have six or seven runs in a game and you aren't going to have seven, eight, nine, ten hits in a game," Walker said. "It's just not going to happen. It is just a matter of trying to be a little better and a little more productive when we do get runners on and trying to learn how to bring in the focus a little bit more. Overall I thought we did a nice job today."
LeCocq improved her record to 8-4 with the victory. She struck out three Beaver batters and walked two. Draper dropped to 12-6 while allowing four hits with a four strikeouts and a walk.
OSU and Stanford wrap up the weekend series with a single game at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 7.
