Men's Crew Rows Solid Races At Opening Day Regatta

SEATTLE, Wash. - - The Oregon State men's crew took on a tough Washington crew Saturday at the Montlake Cut course in Seattle, Wash., as the junior varsity eight took second in the Windemere Cascade Cup. OSU did not send a varsity eight boat to the race, but fielded a varsity four, junior varsity eight, and freshman eight.
The Opening Day Regatta routinely draws crowds of 30,000-40,000 along the banks of Montlake Cut, but that didn't seem to adversely affect the JV eight, as they rowed their fastest time of the year, finishing in 5:55.17. Washington got the win though, cruising home in 5:46.41.
"This was a pretty good race for the JV," OSU assistant coach Matt Imes said. "There were some moments where it went really well, and some where it was a little shaky, but a lot of the credit for the margin of victory goes to Washington's boat, they looked really strong."
The varsity four raced to their best time of the year as well, but their 6:46.17 wasn't fast enough to beat UW's `A' or `B' teams, who finished in 6:26.56 and 6:38.15, respectively.
"The varsity four had a solid race," Imes said. "These guys did a good job, they made a great improvement from two weeks ago (against Washington), so we'll be looking for a little more speed heading into next weekend (at the Pac-10 Championships)."
OSU's freshman eight lost to the Huskies freshman `A' boat by just over nine seconds with a time of 6:04.65, but beat out the UW `B' boat by over nine seconds.
"It was a much better race for the freshmen in the first 1,000 meters, but we need to work on the second-half a little bit," Imes said. "We just need to fine-tune some things."
Oregon State men's and women's crews will be in action again on May 14 in Sacramento, Calif., when they compete in the Pac-10 Championships.
