CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tarrah Beyster threw a four-hitter for Oregon State, but the No. 12 Beavers were shut out, 1-0, by No. 9 California in Pacific-10 softball action at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Friday.
The Beavers (36-15-1, 6-9 Pac-10) outhit Cal, 5-4, but the difference was timing. OSU had a hit in five different innings, but never got more than one an inning. Cal, on the other hand, had hits in just two of the seven innings, but got two hits in each of those two innings.
"Cal came out with a lot more desire. The game meant more to them than us from the start of the game," said coach Kirk Walker. "We put ourselves in a must-score situation rather than to just go out and play."
Mikella Pedretti led off the third inning with a base hit for Cal (43-19, 4-12 Pac-10), went to second on Kristen Morley's grounder and scored on Candace Harper's double for the only run of the game. Cal also had two hits in the second inning but was hitless after the third inning.
Brynnen Guthrie was 2-for-3 for OSU, picking up singles in the first and sixth innings. Shawna Feldt and Steph Adams each doubled for the Beavers, and Beyster had OSU's other base hit. But with the hits all coming in different innings, OSU never threatened to score. The Beavers never advanced a runner past second, and twice the inning ended with a double play.
Beyster dropped to 24-10 with the loss. She threw the complete game, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out six batters.
Nicole DiSalvio picked up the win for Cal, allowing five hits and two walks with four strikeouts to improve to 15-9 on the year.
