SACRAMENTO, Calif. - - The 18th-ranked Oregon State men's varsity eight boat rowed to a season-best time of 5:46.3 and a third-place finish on Sunday at the Pacific-10 Championships, held at the Lake Natoma racecourse in Sacramento.
"I'm really pleased with the result," OSU coach Dave Reischman said. "We were trying to get within seven seconds of Washington, and to be within 11 seconds of California after a 16-second margin last year, that means we did an excellent job of making the changes we needed to make."
Top-ranked California won the race with a 5:35.3, and No. 5 Washington was second at 5:40.7.
Reischman was confident the Beavers locked up a spot at the Intercollegiate Rowing Championships May 30-June 3 with their performance Sunday, but said his crew needed to increase its stroke rate by the time it gets to the IRCs.
The Junior Varsity eight took third in its race as well, finishing in 6:46.8, behind Cal and Washington.
"We were a little disappointed in the result," Reischman said. "We finished where we were seeded to finish, but the time margins weren't what we had hoped for."
The freshman eight had another strong showing for the Beavers with their third-place finish. The freshman crossed the line in 6:13.1, well ahead of fourth-place Stanford.
"They had a solid race," Reischman said of the freshmen. "The crew was a little disappointed with it, they just thought they would be closer to the top two crews."
