TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State women's golf team took a big step toward securing a spot in the NCAA West Regional Championships as they fired a final round 303 to finish in 11th place on Sunday ahead of Pac-10 rivals California, Oregon, and Washington at the Ping/Arizona State Invitational. The Beavers shot a total of 912 at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course.
OSU will play Apr. 15-16 at the Peg Barnard Invitational before the Pacific-10 Conference Championships begin in Eugene on Apr. 24-26.
The Beavers got a season-low round of 71 from senior Rachel Borcherts to lead OSU. Carina Olsson finished a strong tournament with a final-round 75 to tie with Borcherts in 16th place at 223. Olsson and Borcherts both equaled or beat their best finish of the season with their scores this weekend.
"It was better today," OSU head coach Rise Lakowske said. "We missed some opportunities, but beating California, Oregon, and Washington should help us make Regionals."
Anne Brooksby finished at 233 after a 78 on Sunday, and Stacie Ferguson finished at 234 with a 79 in the final round.
Brie Del Bone, playing in her second tournament for OSU since transferring from the University of Nevada during winter break, finished at 238.
Senior Reena Eklund, who played as an individual, shot 246.
Top-ranked Arizona outplayed intrastate rival No. 3 Arizona State on the final day to take a three- stroke win after the two were tied on Saturday.
Arizona's Jenna Daniels gave the Wildcats a clean sweep of the team and individual competition, as she torched the rest of the field for an eight-stroke win over ASU's Miriam Nagl. Daniels finished at 9-under 207.
