TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State women's golf team cut 16 strokes off Thursday's score to finish the second round of the NCAA West Regional with a 304 on Friday, but the Beavers still find themselves in 23rd place with a score of 624. OSU needs to finish in the top 13 to qualify for the NCAA Championships May 24-27.
Rachel Borcherts posted a 73 on the par 72 Karsten Golf Course to lead the Beavers, and is in a tie for 55th place at nine-over-par 153. Borcherts was 54th at last year's West Regional.
"They played better today, but we didn't finish very well," OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. "We were five-to-seven shots over on the last couple of holes, so it was a little disappointing, but they definitely responded better to the course. The greens were faster and we still putted well."
Carina Olsson followed up her opening-round 77 with a 78 on Friday, and is tied for 72nd at 155. Anne Brooksby is at 160, and Reena Eklund is at 166.
The second round was unkind to opening-round leader Tulsa, as they fell to ninth place and top-ranked Arizona moved up from second to claim the lead with a 4-under-par effort Friday of 284. The Wildcats hold a nine-shot lead over second-place San Jose State.
Arizona State's Miriam Nagl leads Candie Kung of USC, who shot a 65 on Friday, and Rebecka Heinmert of San Jose State by one stroke with a 5-under 139.
