CORVALLIS, Ore. - Tarrah Beyster threw a two-hitter to lead the No. 12 Oregon State softball team to a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Arizona State at Ropes-Fetrow Field on Saturday.
Beyster struck out four batters en route to pitching her fifth complete game shutout of the year. She improved to 22-9 with the victory and picked up her second win over ASU this season.
"We did a nice job coming out every inning," said coach Kirk Walker. "This was very similar to the game Tarrah threw against them at the Kia Klassic. She's very effective when she gets ahead of the batters like she did."
The Beavers (34-13-1, 4-7 Pacific-10) jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning. Shawna Feldt started things off with a single and went to second when Brynnen Guthrie grounded out to third base. Shelly Prochaska and Beyster drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and Jenni Jodoin singled to right field to drive in two runs. Beyster's walk was the 200th of her career and 39th this season.
"Jenni's had to do that a lot this year, hitting behind Tarrah," said Walker. "It's nice to see her be more consistent and swinging at good pitches."
The Beavers added a third run in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Beyster hit a single to deep center field to send Feldt home. Guthrie tried to score as well, but was thrown out at home. Beyster's hit was about six inches from going over the fence for a grand slam.
"(Tarrah) knew I wanted it hit deep, and she was very committed to not hitting into a double play," Walker said. "But, I don't think she was trying to hit it out."
ASU's Erica Beach dropped to 12-7 with the loss after giving up seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Beavers and Sun Devils (38-13, 6-8 Pac-10) will play again Sunday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m.
