SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's varsity eight narrowly missed going to Sunday's grand final at the San Diego Crew Classic, but OSU's second varsity eight rowed to a time of 7:00.67 to win their heat and earn a spot in the Grand Final.
"The second varsity rowed an excellent race that earned a spot in the grand final for the first time in quite a few years," OSU women's coach Charlie Owen said. "They have continued to build on last week's good race, and I'm looking forward to seeing how well they do tomorrow."
OSU's varsity eight will race in the petite final after finishing in fourth place, just 2.39 seconds behind third-place Wisconsin. Only the top three finishers in each heat qualify for the grand final.
"We made good improvement from last week, but unfortunately we didn't row fast enough to reach the Grand Final," Owen said of the women's varsity eight. "Last week we were slow in the first 500 meters. We worked on our starts all week and today managed to be much faster."
The women's novice eight took third in their heat, finishing in 7:21.13 behind Washington State and Michigan. This is the second weekend in a row that OSU's women have rowed against WSU, and the Beavers made up over three seconds to Washington State compared to last week's novice eight race.
The women's varsity eight will get another chance to race the Cougars in tomorrow's petite final as well.
"We are happy to have made improvement, and we're looking forward to racing with Washington State tomorrow in the petite finals," Owen said.
The men raced Saturday as well, but their results were unavailable Saturday night. The men will race Sunday as well.
