HONOLULU, Haw. - - After shooting a second round 322 at the Dr. Thompson's Rainbow Tournament, the Oregon State women's golf team is tied for eighth place at 643 with Minnesota, Colorado, and Texas-El Paso in the 14-team field.
Carina Olsson, a junior from Sollentuna, Sweden, shot a 78 on Wednesday to move into a tie for 27th at 14 over par. The 78 is her lowest second-round score of the year.
Senior Rachel Borcherts finished the day just one stroke back of Olsson and is tied for 32nd after shooting a 79 Wednesday.
Anne Brooksby and Bridget Bieth shot 81 and 84, respectively, and are at 19 and 20-over for the tournament. Reena Eklund is at 30-over heading into Thursday's final round.
Jennifer Ferrante, a senior who is golfing in her first tournament of the year, sits at 27-over while playing as an individual. Her score will not count towards OSU's team total.
"The wind picked up today, and they struggled with that," OSU assistant coach Brian Watts said of the Beavers second-round score. "I saw a hole-in-one from an Oklahoma player at the beginning of the day, but other than that I didn't see a whole lot of good shots."
Watts was hopeful that a little extra practice will pay dividends tomorrow. "We're just working on some little things," Watts said. "Course management and mental errors hurt us today. We spent time on the range and green after the round trying to get things back to where they need to be."
In the team competition, eighth-ranked Pepperdine built a seven shot lead over No. 3 Southern California after shooting a two-day total of 585. Pepperdine's lead after the first round was one shot, but they managed to shave off three strokes from their opening round score for a 291 on Wednesday at the par- 72 Olomana Golf Links.
The five top-20 teams competing in the tournament hold the top five spots on the leaderboard. After Pepperdine and USC, Arizona (No. 1) is in third, Oklahoma State (9) is fourth, and Oklahoma (20) is in fifth.
Pepperdine is looking to conquer both the team and individual titles at the Rainbow Tournament, as Lindsey Wright holds a one-stroke lead over Jenna Daniels and Cristina Baena of Arizona after finishing the second round at 1-under 143.
Play concludes Thursday with 18 holes.
