FULLERTON, Calif. - - It took a seventh-inning rally for No. 12 Oregon State to pull out a victory over DePaul Friday afternoon in the KIA Klassic softball tournament on the campus of Cal State-Fullerton.
The Beavers (20-5-1) entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 7-4, having struggled offensively with only four hits through the first six innings, then OSU got hot in the seventh. After sophomore Michelle Notaro led off the inning with a single and first baseman Shawna Feldt advanced her to third with a double, Brooke Rutschman came up big with a single to knock the two runners in.
DePaul (9-7) still led 7-6, but with the bases loaded and one out, OSU's Steph Adams reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Rutschman for the tying run. With the bases still loaded, third baseman Shannon Sorg lined out to second base, but in an effort to turn the double play and get Jenni Jodoin out at second, shortstop Liz Bouck committed an error which allowed pinch runner Michelle Chariton to score the winning run from third.
Tarrah Beyster pitched her 11th complete game of the year, allowing nine hits and only five earned runs.
Right fielder Michelle Notaro went 2-for-3 on the afternoon, scoring three runs. Brooke Rutschman and Shannon Sorg both were 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Sorg belted her second homerun of the year in the second inning to tie the score at two apiece.
OSU's eight runs were the most the Beavers have scored in the tournament thus far, and allowed Oregon State to improve its series record against DePaul to 2-3 all-time.
DePaul third baseman Julie Luna went 3-for-4 with a double, a homerun, two RBI, and two runs scored. Pitcher Vanessa Saavedra took the loss after pitching four innings.
Oregon State will be seeded second entering bracket play Friday night. Oklahoma earned the top seed in their pool by virtue of having beaten OSU in head-to-head play Thursday.
