ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Oregon State managed just five hits and one earned run off Texas A&M's Todd Deininger as the Beavers lost 9-4 Saturday afternoon in the Spalding Baseball Fiesta at Albuquerque Sports Stadium. The game was called due to darkness after seven innings, it started over an hour late due to the length of Kansas State's 9-7 win over Washington State in the day's first game and the ballpark's lights were not available for use.
OSU (0-2 overall) wraps up the tournament on Sunday, meeting Kansas State at 12:30 p.m. PST.
Deininger, freshman who was the fifth-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs last summer, struck out seven Beavers and walked three during his 5 2/3 innings on the mound. He left with the Aggies (1-1) leading 9-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
"That kid threw well," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said of Deininger. "That's one of the better guys we'll see this year ... some good things are going to happen to our club if we continue to believe in what we're doing."
Junior college transfer Scott Nicholson got the start for the Beavers, and the lefthander allowed seven runs on 10 hits in five-plus innings, walking three and striking out six.
"Scott threw well, and we played well for the most part but we made some freshman mistakes," Casey said.
Texas A&M broke open a close game in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 9-1 lead. The Aggies had six hits in the inning, including a pair of doubles and a triple off Nicholson and freshman reliever Chris Wilkins, freshman Stephen Copeland finished things off by pitching a scoreless seventh inning for the Beavers.
"We bring Chris Wilkins into a tight game, and then Stephen Copeland," Casey said. "It's the first time in that situation against that caliber of a club, and those things will happen."
OSU had a chance to change the game's momentum in the bottom of the fourth inning. Trailing 3-0, the Beavers started the inning with singles by Eric Stark, Bryan Ingram and Joe Gerber to get within 3-1, Josh Carter then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the tying runs into scoring position with one out.
But Drew Hedges took a called third strike and freshman Brian Barden grounded back to the pitcher to end the inning. The Aggies got the run back in the top of the fifth, and then came up with their five-run sixth inning.
Carter homered for OSU in the seventh, driving a ball over the left-field wall off reliever Chris Scarcella. Ingram was 2-for-3 for the Beavers and is 5-for-7 so far this season.
