LAS VEGAS, Nev. - - Oregon State got 20 hits on Sunday afternoon and then held off a furious ninth-inning rally by Cal State-Northridge to win 13-10 on the final day of the Coors Desert Classic in Las Vegas. First baseman Joe Gerber went 4-for-4 with three runs and third baseman Tim Dryden was 3-for-5 with three RBI and a homerun as the Beavers improved their record to 5-6.
OSU wasted little time before scoring. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Gerber got the hit-parade started with a double. Sophomore Josh Carter then knocked one out of the park for the Beavers' first two runs of the day. Dryden and designated-hitter Chris Biles each scored in the first as well, as OSU took an early 4-0 lead.
After CSNU came back with two runs of their own off of OSU starting pitcher Craig Hays (2-0) in the second, the Beavers responded in the third, again doing their damage with two outs. With the bases loaded, leftfielder Drew Hedges singled to knock in Will Hudson and Biles. Catcher Bryan Ingram then drove in Jackson Coleman from third with a single for OSU's third run of the inning and a 7-2 lead.
Craig Hays and James Atwood combined to pitch 8 1/3 solid innings. Hays went 3 2/3, allowing four hits and three runs. Atwood relieved Hays and stifled the CSNU batters, scattering four hits and giving up just one run.
The game looked as if it was all but won for Oregon State, leading 13-4 heading into the CSNU half of the ninth. Cal State-Northridge took a page out of OSU's book, however, and got hot with two outs to make a valiant comeback effort.
After Atwood got the first out of the inning, Chris Wilkins came on in relief and surrendered five runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk. CSNU first baseman Tim Arroyo lead the charge with a two-run homer to bring CSNU within 13-8. CSNU got two more runs to make it 13-10, before Nick Renault came on in relief of Mark McLemore with the bases loaded and the tying run on first to get the final out and earn his second save of the year.
Carter lead OSU with four RBI on the afternoon going 2-for-5 with a double in addition to his homerun, while Ingram was 2-for-6. Hedges went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Centerfielder Jackson Coleman also had two hits for the Beavers, as 10 different OSU players got hits.
Oregon State will take on the Washington Huskies in Seattle next weekend, as they play a two-game series on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 1p.m. each afternoon.
