FRESNO, Calif. - - Oregon State's baseball team fell behind early to Fresno State on Sunday afternoon and couldn't muster enough offense to recover from a 3-0 first-inning deficit. Fresno State's Beau Hintz pitched his second complete game of the season and allowed just four hits - three to OSU outfielder Josh Carter.
"Obviously, we didn't score any runs," said OSU assistant coach Dan Spencer. "Anybody in baseball knows that when you're swinging the bat well it's contagious, and the opposite is also true."
Spencer attributed part of Fresno State's success against OSU pitching to the Beavers' own lack of offense. "When you're not scoring runs, it also affects your pitching," Spencer said. "For the most part, our pitching was solid, but they see you're not scoring runs and feel like they've really got to hold them (the other team) down."
Fresno State (8-2), - winners of eight in a row - turned in 13 hits on the day, with five players tallying two hits apiece.
Mark Newell (1-1) started the game and went 3 2/3 innings for the Beavs, giving up five hits and four runs in taking his first loss of the year. James Atwood, Nick Renault, and Corky Wray all pitched in relief for Oregon State (1-5).
Oregon State lost all three games to Fresno State this weekend, and Spencer attributed that, in part, to players trying to perhaps do too much.
"You get some guys pressing and someone tries to do something out of their role, you get seven or eight guys doing that and you can get cold in a series and stay cold," said Spencer.
Oregon State plays next at the Coors Desert Classic, in Las Vegas, Nev. Feb. 24-27, where they will play five games in four days. OSU opens against West Virginia.
