LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Tanya Ricioli won two events and finished second in another to take top all-around honors as the No. 12 Oregon State gymnastics team placed second in a four-team meet at the Summit on Saturday evening.
No. 10 Louisiana State won the meet with a 192.600, while the Beavers scored a 191.100. No. 20 Ohio State was third with a 190.650, and host Michigan State was fourth with a 190.625.
"I'm really proud of this group. We had a lot of new people in the lineup, and they did a good job," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "It's going to be an exciting year. They're going to keep improving very quickly."
The Beavers had five freshmen competing, including two all-arounders and another who competed on two events.
Ricioli was first on bars with a 9.825, and her 9.80 on vault tied teammate Lara Degenhardt for first on that event. She finished second on floor with a 9.825 to lift her to an all-around mark of 38.300 for the night.
The Beavers also got a victory from Corrie Young, who scored a 9.90 to take home top honors on the balance beam. Stephanie Bychowski added a career-high 9.85 on beam to finish second, and freshman Tiffani White placed third on the event with a 9.80.
Bychowski also tied for third on bars with a 9.775, and freshman Annie Campbell placed fourth on floor with a 9.80.
"We did really good for our first meet. With a little more practice and with some more meets, we'll do better," Ricioli said. "(This meet) was a lot of fun for me, but I know I can still do better. It was a little different being with a team than at a club meet."
OSU started off slowly, with two falls on floor followed by three on vault to put the Beavers in third place after two rotations. But strong performances on bars and beam moved the Beavers into second place in the final standings.
"Most of the falls we had were probably because they were really going at it and were maybe too aggressive," Chaplin said. "We'll tweak some things for BYU, and hopefully our scores will jump."
The Beavers face BYU at 6 p.m. PST on Friday, January 14 in Provo, Utah.
