CORVALLIS, Ore. - For the second week in a row, the Oregon State gymnastics team trailed after two events but came through with strong performances on beam and floor to win the meet. This time, the Beavers finished with a 192.100-191.650 win over Washington at the Cellular One Season Opener at Gill Coliseum on Friday night.
OSU (4-1, 1-0 Pac-10) started the meet strong with a season-best 48.825 on vault, but all six Beavers fell on bars for a 45.775 score that put them behind, 95.750-94.600 after two rotations.
Washington's (1-1, 1-1) lead was cut to .875 entering the final rotation after the Beavers posted a season-best 48.550 on beam in the third rotation. OSU then put together a solid 48.950 effort on floor, and with the help of a couple Washington falls on beam, was able to secure the come-from-behind victory.
"This team has a knack for coming back. I was very proud that they picked it up on beam and floor. Emotionally, this was one of the hardest comebacks," said coach Tanya Chaplin.
OSU took the top four places on floor, led by freshman Annie Campbell's 9.90. Freshman Tanya Ricioli was second with a 9.825, and junior Katrina Severin and freshman Tiffani White tied for third at 9.775.
The Beavers also captured four of the top five scores on beam. Junior Stephanie Bychowski and senior Corrie Young tied for first with 9.80 marks. Ricioli was fourth with a 9.75, and White was fifth at 9.65. Senior Bea-Tistu-Whisenhunt also scored a 9.80 and would have tied for first place, but her routine was an exhibition performance.
Ricioli also won vault with a 9.85, and Severin tied for second with a 9.825 on the event.
"I have kind of mixed feelings. I'm unhappy with one event, but I'm happy with vault, beam and floor. We are right on track for a 195. Bars was unacceptable," Chaplin said.
Washington's Lanna Apisukh won the all-around with a 38.800, while Ricioli took second at 38.550, despite a fall on bars. Campbell was third with a 37.975.
