PORTLAND, Ore. - Jen VanderArend scored her first two goals of the season as the Beavers defeated Portland State 4-1 at Strausser Field. Oregon State (5-3-1 overall) also controlled the offensive side of the field by out shooting the Vikings (4-4-0) 19 to 5.
"We possessed the ball very well," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We challenged ourselves going into today and we did very well."
The scoring began in the 27th minute as VanderArend scored an unassisted goal to put the Beavers ahead for good. Katie Henderson added a goal in the 35th minute off a Leila Kaady corner kick to give OSU a 2-0 lead at the half.
The score remained at 2-0 until the 85th minute as VanderArend scored another unassisted goal to double her season total and put the match out of reach. Beth Thomason also scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Henderson.
Oregon State's shutout was ruined in the final minute of the second half as Jamie Harlor put one past OSU goalkeeper Jerika Duran with only 43 seconds remaining.
"Control and movement was very good," Fennah said. "We played very, very well."
The Beavers travel east to El Paso, Texas where they will face either Indiana or Purdue on Friday, followed by Texas-El Paso on Sunday.
