EL PASO, Texas - Coral Slater's overtime goal gave Oregon State a 1-0 win over Texas-El Paso in non-league women's soccer Sunday afternoon at the World Soccer Shootout. The victory left the Beavers (7-3-1 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) unbeaten in their two games at the tournament and put OSU on a three-game winning streak going into Pacific-10 play. Oregon State opens the conference season against California at 2 p.m. Friday on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium, then meets Stanford at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Sunday's victory over the Miners (6-4-1 overall) also allowed OSU to surpass its number of victories for all last season.
"We struggled with the conditions," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said of playing on a hard, uneven field. "Still, it felt good to get the two wins ... it was a matter of scrapping it out, and I was proud of how the team did that."
OSU finally got the win in the 98th minute on a play off a free kick. The ball was spotted deep in the Miners' half of the field, wide to the right side, and Leila Kaady booted the ball to the near post. Slater then headed it home to give the Beavers the victory with her first goal of the season.
Oregon State goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease made six saves to earn the shutout, her second of the season and the fifth of her career. For the most part, it was an evenly-played contest with the Beavers owning a 14-12 edge in shots and forcing UTEP goalkeeper Amanda Smith to make nine saves. Both teams had four corner kicks and nine fouls.
"The ball bounced all over the place," Fennah said of the conditions. "It didn't allow you to get it down (on the field), which is what we'd like to do. But, sometimes a game isn't pretty and you've just got to roll your sleeves up and take care of it."
